Foot drop is one of the most frustrating consequences of stroke, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological conditions. Functional Electrical Stimulation — or FES — is a technology that is transforming outcomes for people with foot drop.
What Is Foot Drop?
Foot drop occurs when the muscles that lift the front of the foot are weakened or paralysed. This is usually caused by neurological damage. Causes include stroke, MS, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and peripheral nerve damage.
What Is FES?
Functional Electrical Stimulation uses small electrical impulses to stimulate the peroneal nerve, triggering the muscles that lift the foot at precisely the right moment in the walking cycle.
The Benefits of FES for Foot Drop
- Improved walking speed, confidence and safety
- Reduced risk of trips and falls
- Reduced fatigue during walking
- Potential for some neuroplastic recovery with regular use
- Non-invasive and suitable for home use
FES at Physiowork
Our physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and provision of FES devices. FES assessments are available at our Norfolk and Suffolk clinics, and we also provide home visits.
